ABSTRACT

Even though a person’s thoughts, personality, emotions, motivation, cognition, and other individual factors may not always be considered when assessing their criminal behavior, there is no doubt that these elements play a significant role in both the decision to commit a crime and how it is carried out. If these factors were irrelevant, then all individuals exposed to the same circumstances would choose to commit the same offence in the same way. However, that is clearly not the case. This discrepancy highlights the importance of understanding the psychological dimensions that underlie criminal acts, as well as examining how crime itself has evolved over time within society.

The present study examines the intricate relationship between crime and psychological factors within the broader socio-legal context. Drawing upon theories such as Operant Conditioning and Multiple Causation, the research highlights the role of delayed justice, insufficient legal execution, societal influence, and lack of victim support in perpetuating offence. It also critically examines the dual role of media, both as a mirror and a catalyst in shaping public perception and criminal intent in people. The study calls for a transformative shift in the judicial and societal response to crime, one that is more nuanced, timely, and grounded in psychological understanding, to foster safer and more empathetic communities.
