ABSTRACT

The (RMS) Titanic a British luxury passenger liner that descended on April 14-15, 1912, during its first voyage to New York City from Southampton, England, killing about 1,517, happens to be one of the most well-known tragedies of the modern history.

The instant cause of the Titanic’s demise was her impact with an iceberg that caused the ocean liner to sink. While the ship could allegedly remain afloat if as many as 4 of its 16 water tight compartments were breached, the impact had affected around 6 compartments. It was formerly believed that the iceberg had caused a long gouge in the body of the ship.  Examination of the wreck by the scientists led to the discovery that the accident had given raise to a series of thin incisions, thus causing water to flood the Titanic.

On the bright side, this disaster altered the course of sea travel forever. It led to the establishment of the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea; a treaty that deals with combating several elements which contributed to the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

This article gives a detailed outlook on the causes for the sinking of the Titanic and how the SOLAS convention has helped combat those defects.
