ABSTRACT
This article explores the multifaceted issue of poaching in India, analyzing its historical roots, socio-economic drivers, and legal frameworks. It highlights the challenges posed by cultural and religious beliefs, enforcement gaps, and habitat destruction that contribute to wildlife exploitation. The piece also examines significant judicial decisions, such as Sansar Chand v. State of Rajasthan and Hanif Qureshi v. State of Bihar, which illustrate the judiciary’s role in balancing conservation with community rights. Ultimately, the article calls for a more integrated approach to wildlife protection, combining strict legal measures with community engagement and sustainable development strategies.
